o1. FactsFact: Brennan is half dragging, half pulling me along in the high snowdrifts on either side of us.
For some reason, this takes longer than usual. While he's pulling me, I'm reminded of how we met.
Fact: He was my first friend.
I met him in the orphanage on my very first day. Back then he was taller than all the other kids and pretty darn intimidating as well. Who wouldn't be scared of those dark brown eyes that seemed to stare right through you? I was pretty small for my age and traumatized. After all, I wasn't healed enough yet that I could actually correct people on my name.
The lady who brought me in, Ms. Hinkle I think it was, steered me towards Brennan. At the time, I was frightened, but looking back, I shouldn't have been; Brennan wouldn't hurt anyone unless he had to. Or was protecting something. I didn't know any of this at the time though, so I had a pretty good reason to be scared.
"Now Kelley, I want you to meet Brennan. Say hi Brennan!"
"Hello," he mumbled. I almost didn't

not without the children of the sun and moon
to guide her weary lids home.
Guided by the aftermath, she was always two steps behind.
What did the world look like to the girl who had been through it all?
Braved the heaviest of storms,
yet skipping over cracks in the pavement.
They said her eyes were the wisps of clouds before the storm.
To him they were reflections of pages overlooked.
She said it was like she lived the life of someone she had never met.
Laid out to dry, yesterdays news.
He knew her as the girl who was built to never collapse.
He wished he was too.
He loved her more than words could say, and yet her pain was such,
that at times, he feared she wouldn’t make it.
But on nights like these, even when it threatened to consume her,
he became convinced that somehow she would.
